Throwback Thursday: "One Sweet Day" -- Mariah Carey ft. Boyz II Men

Last week, we skipped the regular weekly Throwback Thursday post. Normally that's a sign of me either being too tied up with work, or too absent-minded to remember to put together a post. Neither was the case in this instance, however.

Those who've paid attention have surely figured out that my attention was shifted elsewhere by the sudden and gut-wrenching news I received that morning. In my writings for this site I'm always honest, first and foremost, so I'll tell you that I can't remember a 72-hour period during my life when I've shed more tears. You'll forgive me, then, for this week's Throwback being of a decidedly different nature than the norm.

Given these recent events, though, nothing seems more fitting than this song. Otis was an incredible singer, and a huge fan of R&B. And this 1995 Mariah and Boyz II Men hit harkens back my high school years, when Otis, myself, and the rest of our crew seemed to have the whole world ahead of us. The photos and stories my friends and I have shared this past week have brought that time back to mind vividly and often. I can only hope we get to experience that feeling again in the next life, homie. Love you, O. Be at peace, and rest knowing we all miss you.

Throwback Thursday: "Honey [Bad Boy Remix]" -- Mariah Carey ft. Mase, The LOX, & Puff

I've said before that 1997 was Mariah's peak, and this video does nothing to change my mind. '97 MC was like the '06 Kobe Bryant of Pop/R&B singers.

The song itself is nothing groundbreaking; it came at the height of Bad Boy's "shiny suit" days. And Mase, Jada, and Styles P treated their verses like the last day of work before Christmas, doing just the minimum required of them. But I'll tell you this: This looks like one of the more fun videos to be a part of. I'm always a sucker for a clip where everyone's just goofing off and not mean-mugging the camera like they're about to go to war with Liam Neeson in an Eastern European brothel.

Throwback Thursday: "Breakdown" -- Mariah Carey ft. Krayzie Bone & Wish Bone

GotDAMN do I miss 1997 Mariah. I don't think she looked hotter at any other point in her career. Watching this video takes me back to freshman year in college.

Throwback Thursday: "I Know What You Want" -- Busta Rhymes ft. Flipmode Squad & Mariah Carey

Sound quality on this one ain't so great, but you get what you pay for... This was a lowkey (despite the obvious commercial appeal) track, definitely something good for bumping on the way to the club or bar. Mariah was still looking fierce back then (2003), but she looks plain as hell next to the object of Busta's video-vixen desire (Lashontae Heckard, looking like straight fire).

I've got to give the production team some props for making a video that's cinematic without being overwrought (*cough*Diddy*cough*), even if it doesn't jive completely with the track's subject matter.

When Corner Sleeper told me about this diss track last night I thought it was pretty wack of Em to diss a married R&B singer who is an international sex symbol.

But then I heard this and it's pretty funny. Em gets incredibly personal, describing the multiple flights Mariah took to see him, the dry humping episodes they had, and to top it off the premature ejaculation that he left on her stomach. Nick Cannon just went on everyone's "Cold" list.

I had no idea that this song ever was recorded but it's funny. This is an apparent comeback at Eminem by Mariah Carey. Not a bad idea but when you consider it's Mariah Carey SINGING, it's kind of hard to respect her gangsta. But she does dress up as Em in the video to add some clown points. It never hurts to watch a Mariah video either.
