Monday Kickstart: Back to School

Back when I was in college, the most mature insult I—and the others in whatever circle of friends or like-minded fellow 20-somethings happened to be gathered—could throw at a collection of individuals is to say it was "like a high school." Our small liberal arts college's proclivity for gossip? So high school. The way people bickered over petty bullshit in my family? What were they, freshmen in high school?

And the internet? With its rumors, unsolicited opinions, and unsubstantiated accusations? The internet acts just like a big high school.



You have to watch that about 10 times to pick up on all of the websites and references they throw into it. Well done, Cracked. Though, unless I overlooked it, I notice that they didn't put themselves into it, which feels a little catty. A little immature. A little...high school.

This week we turn to Ms. Ruby Palm for inspiration, for two reasons: (1.) she's a proud L.A. gal; (2.) she's got more curves than Highway 1:

A few months ago, the sharing rights got screwed up on all of CS's photos (you can still see the wreckage in most of the pre-2014 posts in the archives). I tried time after time to contact Google for assistance with the issue, but never got so much as feigned interest in return. I found it strange that a company known for their "Don't be evil" slogan didn't seem the slightest bit interested in helping a customer in distress. Now, though...it's all starting to make sense.

Google is great, but their translation software could use some work. And this video does a magnificent job of highlighting that. As crazy as it may seem halfway through, just wait 'til the end.

Google Reinvents the Way You Search for Music

Google is always working to improve the way you use the internet, and now they've turned their attention towards online music searches. The new Google Music will provide you with free streams of songs, links to buy, and a lyrics database (though the people at MTV.com report that this particular cog of the machine could use some further tinkering).

Looking to apply their powerful search engine to the world of music, Google officially launched their new music discovery service. Not so much a new site as it is a new set of integrated options added to normal search results, Google Music connects people searching for artists, songs or lyrics with free streams of tracks care of MySpace's iLike and Lala and with links to purchase songs and albums from one of Google Music's partners.

"Music is a big part of our lives. In fact, two of our top 10 queries of all time are music related," explains the introductory video on Google Music's home page. "We think it's time to bring the power of our search to the music industry, so that you can not only find but also discover music."

Gotta love those folks at Google. Once the bugs are worked out, this should be a pretty helpful tool. How many times have you been looking for a song, but weren't sure that you were downloading/buying the correct version that you had heard? Personally, I'm anxious for the day when they come out with "Google Dating," where you can find out all of the things you really want to know about a girl (Is she crazy? Is she clean? Has she ever been in jail? Does she cook? Is she freaky? Is she too freaky to wife? Is she too freaky not to wife?) before you ever ask her out. But I'm a dreamer.
